Just to show you what opportunities TBridge and a social media presence can bring.  Recently I had been invited  by the City of Ottawa to participate in a steering committee concerning Ottawa’s Economic Development Strategy.  The purpose of the committee is to update the city’s current long term plan, the 20/20 Economic Strategy, that had been approved by council in 2003.  In short, to provide priority and direction of the city’s programing initiatives for the following 5 years.

The process is intended to be broad spectrum:  holistic, inclusive, and with a focus on a triple bottom line for our community.  The breadth of communities involved speaks to that intention:  business, research, education, cultural, social, transportation, health, labor, tourism, etc. are just a few.

I was asked to represent the youth perspective on the committee.  I’m honored to be joined with Michel Bilodeau, president and CEO of the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario; Tracey Clark, managing director of Bridgehead Canada; Richard Van Loon, former Carleton University president, and Steve West, president of MDS Nordion.  We make up the external community members, while the city members include councillors Steve Desroches and Rob Jellett, who co-chair the committee, as well as  councillors Rick Chiarelli, Diane Deans, Eli El-Chantiry and Marianne Wilkinson.

It’d be an understatement to say I’m thrilled with this opportunity – the learning, the experience, and the chance to be intrinsically involved with, and perhaps impact my community – well this kind of opportunity doesn’t come knocking on your door everyday.

There’s a chance for everyone to be involved and to give their two cents about how they believe our city’s priorities, focus, and vision should be.  There will soon be a steering committe blog with the white papers, research and collateral that are being discussed in the committee.  Read the blog and comment – feedback is what we’re looking for.  I can guarntee that the feedback will be read, addressed, and taken into account.  In the mean time I’ll be posting on TBridge, so follow along and let’s hear what you think!
